The GARNET (Global Affairs and Religion Network) aims to create a sustained conversation across the fields of religion and global affairs. The network brings together faculty from the George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs and Religion Department (CCAS) each month to discuss on a topic that weaves together aspects of both fields.

How do religious beliefs shape international affairs?

Understanding the linkages between religion and international affairs can provide a pathway to dialogue and resolution of many intractable problems. The conflict between Israel and Palestine, the rise of QAnon, China’s relations with its minorities, and even new issues such as CRISPR technology policy all reflect religious norms.   

The format of dialogue allows researchers to openly contemplate sensitive topics with colleagues in a private setting. The dialogue aims to broaden the knowledge of faculty in both fields, while fostering a collegial atmosphere. Exchanging views will create opportunities for shared research between the faculty, as well as the possibility for jointly taught courses.
